Yeah, You still hear these stories about people getting robbed because someone finds out they've got thousands stashed in their coffee cans or whatever and it does seem like they set themselves up...After all, we all know the best place for your money is under a big rock!

Then again, I still cringe when I see people in front of me at the store filling out paper checks.

As far as the previous story goes, I wholeheartedly agree that we've gone overboard with wrecking people's lives over something minor or ultimately harmless that they did in their past; I just don't think we should ever limit the rights of business owners to know who they are hiring.
And in all honesty, I also wonder if most companies that don't deal with things of a highly sensitive nature (schools, banks, government agencies etc) even DO background checks in the first place.

I can remember way back when a liberal was one who was generous with his own money.

"We cannot expect the Americans to jump from capitalism to Communism, but we can assist their elected leaders in giving Americans small doses of socialism until they suddenly awake to find they have Communism."

- Soviet Leader Nikita Khrushchev, 1959
